Grooved Wood Panels

The grooves let sound in; the backing absorbs it
Grooved gives lines, perforated gives dots: same principle, different look
Open area and backing decide how much it absorbs, not the wood
Suited to walls and ceilings where the timber should stay on show
Grooved Wood Panels
Grooved wood panels are timber or veneered boards with slots milled into the face. Sound passes through the grooves into an absorbing layer behind, usually felt or mineral wool. The wood stays visible, so the wall reads as joinery, and absorption is set by open area, backing and air gap.
Grooves give long linear lines where perforated wood gives a field of holes, on the same principle. We source from several manufacturers and are tied to none. Book a free site survey and we will recommend pattern and backing, then supply and install across the UK.
Sound absorption
Sound passes through the grooves into an absorbing backing.
Design flexibility
Groove width, spacing, timber finish and backing colour set the look.

An acoustician visits the site, or works from your drawings and photos when a visit isn't practical. Either way, the room, its surfaces and how it is used are recorded before any advice is given.
Reverberation, ambient noise and noise transfer are read against what the space is used for. The findings arrive as an AI-assisted acoustic report with recommendations, yours to keep with no obligation to proceed.
Treatment is modelled against a reverberation target, then drawn up with panel positions, fixings and finishes. Nothing moves forward until you have approved the design.
Every quotation comes with the specification behind it, listing products by type, quantity and finish with costs set out line by line. What is quoted is what the design calls for.
Panels, baffles, ceilings and screens come from the manufacturers we work with and are supplied to the approved specification. What arrives on site matches what was designed.
Our installation team fits to the approved drawings, checking positions and fixings as they go. One team supplies and installs the treatment.
Optional paid add-on: after fit-out the space can be measured again and compared with the original survey, so the improvement is measured rather than assumed. Compliance testing is carried out with our testing partner, EMC Acoustics, and the written record goes into your building file.
Specification, performance and installation
Your product questions, answered.
Both let sound pass through openings in the face into an absorbing layer behind. Grooved panels have milled slots, which gives long linear lines. Perforated panels have drilled holes, which gives a pattern of dots. The principle is the same, so the choice is mostly about the look you want. We confirm the open area and backing for your room.
They absorb sound when there is an absorbing layer behind the grooves. The wood face alone reflects sound. Absorption depends on how much of the face is open, on the backing material and on the air gap. A panel with no absorbent backing would be mainly decorative, so we check what sits behind the face.
Yes. Many grooved panels are made for both. On ceilings, weight and fixings matter more, so we check the deck and the fixing method at survey. For a full suspended ceiling, see our Wood & Linear Acoustic Ceilings.
Finishes vary by manufacturer and typically include veneers and lacquers in a range of timber tones and colours. We show the options for the products we recommend and send samples on request; allow a few working days. Fire performance differs between products, so we confirm it for your project before ordering.
Not always. Wall panels absorb sound where they are fitted, so large, hard-ceilinged rooms often need ceiling treatment too. The survey shows how much absorption the room needs and where it should go, so you do not buy more or less than the room requires.
