A new-build hall needed to avoid feeling low and compressed under a closely spaced ceiling shell, while still delivering strong acoustic performance.

Delivered within an entirely new-build structure, this multi-purpose conference hall was one of Acoustic Design's early full-scope projects, with every element of the fit-out carried out directly by the practice.

Custom geometric acoustic timber panels are combined with high-absorption fabric panelling, and a central arched ceiling form gives the room its most distinctive feature.

Indirect LED lighting gives the hall a wide range of atmospheres.

Challenge

A new-build hall needed to avoid feeling low and compressed under a closely spaced ceiling shell, while still delivering strong acoustic performance.

The brief called for a hall that would stand out architecturally as well as acoustically, without compromising performance.

The closely spaced shell structure risked making the room feel low and compressed.

Solution

A central arched ceiling form was introduced and visually separated from the perimeter ceiling, with ventilation rerouted through the side wings and indirect LED lighting integrated into both the ceiling and the three-dimensional timber panelling.

A central arched ceiling form was introduced to lift the perceived height. Ventilation ductwork was carried out through the side wings, so the central ceiling could be visually and structurally separated from the surrounding perimeter.

Custom geometric acoustic timber panels were combined with high-absorption fabric panelling between them. Indirect LED lighting was set into the central ceiling zone and across the face of the three-dimensional timber panels.

Outcomes

A conference hall with a distinctive sculpted ceiling, strong acoustic performance and a dramatic range of lighting atmospheres.

A 490-seat hall with strong acoustic performance and build quality, and lighting scenarios that give it a dramatic range of atmospheres.

It was among Acoustic Design's earliest fully self-delivered projects.

From first survey to final finish

One team handles all seven stages, the same way on every project, so you always know what happens next.

Acoustic Survey

A surveyor visits the site, or works from your drawings and photos when a visit isn't practical. Either way, the room, its surfaces and how it is used are recorded before any advice is given.

Acoustic Assessment

Reverberation, ambient noise and noise transfer are read against what the space is used for. The findings arrive as a written report with recommendations, yours to keep with no obligation to proceed.

Acoustic Design

Treatment is modelled against a reverberation target, then drawn up with panel positions, fixings and finishes. Nothing moves forward until you have approved the design.

Specification & Quotation

Every quotation comes with the specification behind it, listing products by type, quantity and finish with costs set out line by line. What is quoted is what the design calls for.

Acoustic Product Supply

Panels, baffles, ceilings and screens come from our Acoustic Solutions range and are supplied to the approved specification. What arrives on site matches what was designed.

Acoustic Installation

Our own engineers fit to the approved drawings, checking positions and fixings as they go. One team supplies and installs, so nothing is handed between contractors.

Acoustic Testing & Compliance

Optional: after fit-out the space can be measured again and compared with the original survey, so the improvement is measured rather than assumed. Results are reported against the relevant standards and the written record goes into your building file.
